Beware, there are a few things you should understand before you buy flooring for your house. After all its a long term investment and you have the right to know what you are going to get into and see every day for a long time. After all its going in your own house......
So here's what you need to look for and consider when buying Laminate and or hardwood flooring:
1) First and foremost, who is the manufacturer & where where is the flooring made? - Is it a popular reputed and established brand that has an easily reachable customer service right here in the USA or is it some unknown never heard of brand.
2) Who will you be calling if you ever have a problem with the floor? - Normally, product warranties are carried by their manufacturers and NOT by the store owners where you buy the product from. So guess what??? The person who sold you the flooring, is most likely going to walk away from the problem by just telling you to contact the manufacturer as its not his or her problem. At that point, are you going to call overseas to a person who you may not even be able to talk to, or just go ahead and spend your hard earned money once again to replace your floor, because the warranty was just "SO CALLED".
3) Who are you buying the floor from??? A reputed store who you will be able to go back to, or somebody's car's trunk?? or some body off the internet you will never see ? Is that person going to be reachable, available when you have a problem?
4) Is the person Selling you a genuine first quality product that is Current line with a full warranty, and not a factory seconds, discontinued or "Off Specification Goods". A lot of times, these goods are not marked seconds or drops & they are not covered by manufacturers warranties irrespective of what the boxes say.
5) Do the graphics Match up acceptably? - A lot of times the graphics / patterns on these products don't match up to acceptable standards at the end joints when you put them together and these look terrible at the seams. In other words , the patterns are off and the boards look like they are of different widths. It is very difficult to identify these kind of problems merely looking at the samples.
6) What kind of a locking mechanism does the flooring have? - There are quite a few different locking mechanisms available and the best one is the "Unilin Lock" which is patented and available only in a few brands , more popularly known as "UNICLIC" this is the ONLY good lock, the best and easiest to install.
7) Do the installers, have a valid contractors license, and Insurance? If yes, is it the correct classification? Because if not, then who will be responsible for a jobsite accident like fire, electrical or personal bodily injury or damage. Most likely it will be you, because it happened on your property & you failed to make sure of insurance and workman's compensation coverage. Specially if you are living in a HOA with attached buildings or units, this kind of damage can extend to multiple units & you might be responsible for all this.
